Minecraft YouTube’s Second Most Searched Item of the Year

on

How big are Minecraft videos on YouTube? Stats released recently show that Minecraft is the second most searched term on the site, only behind the generic term “music.”

According to YouTube parent company Google, here are the top 10 search terms for YouTube in 2014.

  1. Music
  2. Minecraft
  3. Movies
  4. Frozen
  5. Drake
  6. Beyonce
  7. PewDiePie
  8. Happy
  9. Eminem
  10. Taylor Swift

As you can see PewDiePie, who posted some memorable Minecraft vidoes, also ranked high at number 7.

Google shared the news in a post, “Think Gaming Content is Niche? Think Again” that explains just how big Let’s Plays and other gaming-related videos are on its service. The post compares Let’s Plays and players like Stampylonghead to pro athletes, in that people would sometimes rather watch a talented performer play a game than play it themselves.

In fact, Google cited a survey that showed that only 37 percent of people who watch game content actually consider themselves gamers.

“When asked about their motivations for watching gaming videos, viewers mentioned “entertainment” and “humor” as often as they mentioned ‘learning new strategies’ or “game tips.’ We heard similar sentiments when conducting one-on-one interviews with fans and creators at VidCon 2014, a convention for video creator and fan communities, and at New York Comic Con 2014. We also wanted to find out why they watch videos by creators such as PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Quite a few fans answered, ‘Because they’re hilarious!’ Some even compared these videos to stand-up comedy. An up-and-coming gaming creator summed up interest with the following analogy: ‘You don’t have to play soccer to enjoy it on TV,'” the post says.
