Don’t Expect A Minecraft 2 Anytime Soon

on

When Microsoft purchased Mojang last year, the first thought on everyone’s mind was “Now I bet they’ll start making Minecraft 2.” Not so fast, says Jonas Martensson, Mojang’s CEO. “I can’t promise forever there’ll never be a Minecraft 2, but for the foreseeable future there won’t be.” Martensson admitted that there hadn’t really been any discussion about making a Minecraft 2 until he was asked about it by reporters.

Microsoft Game Studios general manager Matt Booty said that conversation has never taken place because Minecraft isn’t like most games where a sequel is expected or even necessary. Minecraft, by contrast, is a singular entity that grows and evolves over time, under a singular name. “The way to think about it is more to do with continual updates and a continual process,” said Booty.

Martensson added he expects the original game to be supported well into 2020. He said his main goal right now is to listen to player feedback, support mods, and release the game for as many platforms as possible (except for Nintendo platforms, for some reason).
