The Dragon Quest Builders trailer made its worldwide debut today during Sony’s press conference at Tokyo Game Show. As we’ve said before, the game is essentially a Minecraft clone with Dragon Quest paint, and today’s footage made little effort to hide that. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing; I expect block-building games to become their own genre eventually, and with both this and Lego Worlds on the way, we’re nine-tenths there.
The trailer contains not a single second of actual gameplay, but it can’t be much different than what the animation suggests, nor can it be that different from Minecraft.
Square also announced a Japanese release date for Dragon Quest Builders: January 28, 2016. So far, Japan is the only territory to gain a solid release date for the game, but it is expected to emerge in all territories eventually. An exclusive for Sony products, it’s coming out for both Playstation 4 and Playstation 3, as well as the Vita if you’ve got one.
