Someone Got Pokemon Red To Work In Minecraft, No Mod Needed

on

What I’m about to talk about isn’t an approximation of Pokemon in Minecraft, where you meet blocky monsters on the field and throw blocky Pokeballs at them. That kind of thing has been done before, anyway. What someone has now done is literally recreated the original Pokemon game in Minecraft. As in….a port of the actual program, rewritten with Minecraft code.

We’ve seen real-life cities, civilizations and the entire Shire recreated in this game, but I think this takes the cake for ambitious projects. It’s not completely up yet, but the creator has progressed so far, there’s no reason to believe it won’t get to a playable point.

Redditor Magib1 created this by first building a Minecraft Game Boy, then using command blocks to write the code for Pokemon into the game, which displays on a 10×9 block screen. It’s unknown how far he plans to go, but all the maps are in there, and he’s deep into his next task, which involves currently writing a fully functional Pokedex.

He’s provided an explanation for how the trick works on Reddit, if you can understand him:

“When the player clicks, a reader armor stand moves and clones the row of new textures behind the display. Display armor stands then detect the block type and stick the corresponding texture on their head before moving. The player model is just swapping between a static walking and standing texture.

In order to store easily accessible information I’m also creating a sort of physical database underneath the block map. For example, the first layer under the map represents whether the block can be walked on or not (green wool = yes, red wool = no). Separate levels with this type of binary information can be created for doorways, surfable tiles, signs, etc. This cuts down on the command blocks needed, as lag is a very serious concern for the map.”

So the only question remaining is…..can I catch Missingno, or is it bug-free?
