This weekend at Minecon 2015 in London, Microsoft announced that when Windows 10 launches later this month, it will coincide with the launch of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta, an exclusive version of the game for that OS only.
What sets this one apart from the traditional PC version is how it takes advantage of Windows 10 features to add new options, making it a good advertising platform. You’ll be able to perform seamless swapping between touchscreen, controller or keyboard/mouse controls. You’ll also be able to play online with Xbox Live and Minecraft Pocket Edition users, and there will be record/share support for built-in GameDVR functions.
If you already own Minecraft for the PC (and if you’re reading a site like this you probably do), the Windows 10 version of the game will be free. Otherwise, it will be $10 for newcomers, which isn’t bad, though Microsoft mentioned it was a temporary price so you’d best jump on it.
Since purchasing Mojang last year, Microsoft has been consistent in exploiting its new toy: every Microsoft platform has gained its own version of Minecraft as soon as possible, starting with the XBox One, leading into this and coming soon to the HoloLens. Once you own the Windows 10 edition, all future updates to the game will be free.
